9 Reasons to Work with a Personal Trainer

The Real Reasons You Need To Workout with a Personal Trainer

Let’s face it, we all want to get into better shape.  Even the professional athlete who walks into the gym ready to crush it wants to push their limits and stay on the cutting edge.  They hire trainers and support staff to push them because they know that’s where success lies in waiting, at the edge of their limits and comfort zone.  Yet so many of us never even explore even the vicinity of our personal limits.  Forget about being an athlete, most of our time is spent sitting in front of a screen wishing we had the motivation to get going.  Around the first of the year, we get motivated for a week or two, join a gym and resolve to make fitness a healthy habit once and for all.  Shortly thereafter we are right back where we started, in front of the screen getting heavier every day.

The big problem we all face: How to maintain motivation and consistent effort week after week, month after month, year after year. Point blank, the easiest and most effective way to do so is to hire a personal trainer.  Not a professional athlete, you say?  Well, you are a professional at work, so why not get the support you deserve?  Read on and you will understand why hiring a personal trainer will make crushing your 2021 fitness goals a reality once and for all.

A quick intro on me, in case we haven’t met in person.  I’m Adam Shuty, the Personal Training Manager at Complete Body on 57th Street.  I’ve been in the fitness business for over 15 years and pride myself in providing educational, transformative fitness experiences. So here are my (completely unbiased) reasons why you need to hire a personal trainer immediately, as in today, Here are 9 reasons why you need to hire a personal trainer now!

1. You have trouble achieving your fitness goals.

Once you sign up with a trainer you will stop skipping workouts, period.  We are each the sum total of our habits and behaviors. Visit the following blog post on how to create better habits and mental tricks. The more time we spend in front of the TV the less time we have to do other things like cook healthy meals or go for a brisk walk outside. Therefore, the essential habit of working out consistently can be almost instantly realized by hiring a personal trainer.

2. Personal Training will help you to create better habits.

We are always making compromises and tradeoffs with the competing responsibilities in our lives.  Sometimes we do ok and get things done while maintaining balance.  The rest of the time we find ourselves battling for position at work, with our relationships and with the ever racing clock.  What gets left behind is our health, self care and wellbeing.  A trainer can help you to find a good grove and keep you there, exercising several times a week and making continual small strides forward.

3. A Certified Personal Trainer will help you to prioritize fitness in your life.

4. You’ve never truly assessed your needs

What is it you truly want when it comes to being healthy and in shape?  Tough question, I know. Few people ever examine what they really need and want, they just say what they think sounds good. Yet, this is exactly the type of thinking you will need to apply to achieve anything of value.  To get to the source of the matter you will need the feedback of a trusted advisor, i.e. a licenced coach.  Although this may sound esoteric, in fact, every assessment performed by an elite, top tier personal trainer should first delve into your reasons for exercising in the first place.  This lack of investigation is why so many people fail to realize their fitness goals; they never connect with their own true reasons for exercising.

5. Now is the time to find your “Why”

Most people hit the gym in early January with the idea that they “need to lose 5-10 pounds”.  However, when put to the test these New Year’s resolutions prove to be flimsy reasoning at best.   Losing weight is a fine goal, but not a reason why.  If they instead said, “I need to lose 5-10 pounds so I don’t have a heart attack and leave my children without a father,” you see the difference.  In a less dramatic example, a grandmother may say, “I need to exercise so I can keep up with my grandchildren”.  An executive may make the statement, “I exercise because I need to stay sharp and maintain my position at the top”. Still many of us exercise because, “we want to look good naked.”  Hey, whatever gets you …excited. The reasons “why” you workout do not matter.  What matters is that your reasons, matter for you.

6. Trainers help create a vision

What would you like to accomplish in the next three to six months?  How do you see yourself?  Are you slumped over at your desk with horrible posture, over eating fried take out food, working long hours, stressed and self medicating with drugs and alcohol? Alternately, do you feel exhilaration waking up well rested, seeing your sculpted body in the mirror as you effortlessly slip on your perfectly fitting clothes, while you make better and better food choices? With your increased confidence and energy your career takes off, your relationships are energized and you have more time and freedom to pursue the activities of your choosing.  Our wish for you would be the latter or better.

7. Go on a mission

Once you are clear on your purpose and vision the next step is to assign yourself a mission.  This is where the rubber meets the road. This is the big goal, the aim of the next three to six months.  Your purpose lets you know why you want to start the habit of exercising, your vision is the ideal scene you see as possible and the mission throws down the gauntlet.  In discussing your mission and goals with your trainer you may say, “Yes, I can commit to training three days a week, drinking more water, eating healthier and getting more sleep. I know if I make these changes now I will achieve my fitness goals!”  The good news is, you don’t even need to know exactly how you will get there.  That’s the trainers job.

8. Client and trainer form a team devoted to your success

The reason you have not succeeded in the past is because you never made health and fitness a true habit. By hiring a Personal Trainer you will sync up with a professional devoted to making your goals a reality.  Next, you will create a vision of yourself in the foreseeable future where you are making strides toward your goals.  You will picture yourself in that future, enjoying all of the benefits of the new habits you have created.  Finally, as you attain milestones, you and your trainer will continually evaluate and update what goals to shoot for.  As your fitness level increases so will your confidence in your ability to achieve higher and higher goals. Every great trainer out there only wants one thing and that’s to provide benefit to the client.
